Bam!
Though it totally sucks to not have Jim and Khari here, we're getting off to a damn fine semester! We just had our first full rehearsal with new drummer Emiliano and the estimable Gombas on guitar, plus Eliza lending trumpet from time to time, and we were fucking hot. Songs got reworked and improved, buckets got sweated, and it was excellent.
Onward and upward: we aim to kick the first show of the semester in a week and a half.
Rock on,
~Grey

The Download!
Hey! Available here is our (Dos Mil Días De Fuego’s) album, La 暇な vida, free for download:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=FE24VX0U
The tracklist is as follows:
1. Keep It Right
2. The Ones Who Break!
3. Stand Tall
4. Live Without It
5. Graff (with Ethan Ranis)
6. Molasses Grind
7. My Child
8. Moseyin’ on Down
9. AITC
10. Frenetic
11. Ai-Oh
12. La 暇な vida
We are: Jim Mattingly, drums; Khari Waits, dj, beats, guitar; Ryan Head, bass; Sara Boxell, dj; Sam Feldman, singing; Grey Castro, emcee. The beat on Graff is by Ethan Ranis, whose music can be found here: http://www.myspace.com/clipwave . (A remix of Stand Tall from Ethan is forthcoming.) Khari’s site is here: http://www.myspace.com/djshatterstarbuffalo . All the music in the download is by us.
Also included are earlier versions of Keep It Right, Stand Tall, and AITC, from Hella Música, a short double-EP we did with Birthday Kids, who also rule. (They are: Jim, from Dos Mil, drums; Liz Hibbard, singing; Ralph Lewis, bass; and Jesse Diener-Bennett, guitar. They make amazing music. Ai-Oh was also on that cd, but it’s the same recording and mix that’s on La 暇な vida, so it’s not in the Hella Música part of the download.)
The main differences in the Hella Música recordings are these: Khari’s guitar part for AITC hadn’t been written yet, so it’s not there; Keep It Right is slower; Stand Tall is faster and the second verse has different lyrics; and Sara hadn’t joined yet, so her scratching isn’t on these three tracks; it’s all Khari. The differences may sound small when described here, but there's actually some cool stuff in the older versions that doesn't come out as much on the album recordings, so it's worth checking out.
On all the songs from both downloads, Jim did just about all the studio work—recording, mixing, the whole thing—with help from Matt Zapp and Garrett Openshaw (the mix of AITC from Hella Música is in large part Garrett’s work). The rest of us helped set stuff up and move stuff around, and marveled at the mixing board. We recorded it all in the TIMARA studios at Oberlin Conservatory (and College) in Oberlin, Ohio--thank you, school! So: listen and enjoy! And spread this music far and wide! We’re not allowed to charge for it, so don’t worry about it being piracy. It’s a gift!

ps. The computer I'm using can't put japanese characters into titles in a compressed file, so just copy and paste the "暇な" in "La 暇な vida" from here if you want the correct track name.

hip frock!
the previous entry in which grey described our band inspired me to write this entry.
the definition of hip frock:
a) the genre of music dos mil, by existing, creates.
b)

mmmmmmmmm, that is one hip frock, i must say. with an emphasis on the hip.
*disclaimer: this was in no way meant to objectify women, but to give an example of a really beautiful dress that i believed to accurately reflect the phrase "hip frock." i can't really help the fact that beyonce is curvy and gorgeous.
**attention dmddf: if any of you have objections to our band identifying with the term "hip frock" as an amalgamation of the genres "hip hop", "funk", and "rock", please let me know, and this entry will cease to exist.
***if anyone in dmddf has a problem with us being in any way linked to beyonce because of her music, i will put up a different picture without a human in it. if anyone has a problem with us being linked to beyonce because she's pretty, well...i'm just not really sure how sane you are.

Hey folks!
Dos Mil Días De Fuego are a hip hop/funk/rock band from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. We're made up of Sam Feldman (singing), Ryan Head (bass), Grey Castro (emcee), Sara Boxell (dj), Khari Waits (dj, beats, guitar) and Jim Mattingly (drums), but Jim and Khari have left campus, so our lineup will be changing, come september. We like to rock. Our album will be downloadable for free from this site soon, and we'll have more information here too.
